Today Trends and Tolstoy is 2 years old! It is absolutely incredible to me how much the blog has grown in just two short years. When I started this project I was a senior in high school with hopes of living in a big city some day. I was taking photos in my basement with the timer on my digital camera. Now I’m studying abroad in some of the biggest cities in Europe, and Trends and Tolstoy has gone from my afternoon hobby to my salary paying job.

trendsandtolstoybirthday2.jpgThe picture on the left was the very first outfit post I put on the blog exactly two years ago. On the right is one of the first photos I took when I got to Kasteel Well. My style has grown immensely in just two years. I’ve gone from bows, cardigans, and flip-flops to leather, studs, and heels. Trends and Tolstoy has gone from having a fan base of one (my mom) to a fan base of over 16,000 in 75 different countries. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped make Trends and Tolstoy a success. I look forward to another fabulous year!

Last weekend was Carnival weekend! Everywhere we went people were dressed up in all kinds of costumes. Parents, children, teens; everyone came out into the street for parades, parties, and the crowning of the Carnival Prince. We watched the parade here in Well and dressed up to celebrate with the locals.

This was my carnival costume! You know I can’t resist anything with polka dots and tulle!

Here I am with Ripley in front of the parade.

And here’s the gang all dressed up after the parade! It was fun to be able to experience a bit of the local culture.

Style Resolutions 2013

With every new year comes a new set of resolutions, and while I make the usual half hearted promise to go to the gym, I also make a set of style resolutions. As with anything in life, it’s important to keep pushing your style to develop and grow. My style resolutions are the goals that I actually work hard to keep. It’s fun to set goals for the year and look back on the old ones to see if you made them. 2013 is going to a big year, so I have some important resolutions to go with it.

happynewyear3

1) The Balance of Form and Function
I’m starting off 2013 studying abroad in the Netherlands for a semester. The program is structured so that students attend classes four days a week and then have the weekend to travel. This means that I’ll not only need to fit 3 months worth of clothes into one under-fifty-pound suitcase, but also that I’ll have to master travel style. As someone who is used to having at least 60 pairs of shoes available at all times, this is going to be a struggle. My goal is to find a way to reconcile my love of fashion with my need for comfort and function while I’m traveling.

2) Breaking the Rules
One of my resolutions from last year was to experiment with different looks and I’ve definitely mastered that. In a few short months my style went from girly to boho to dominatrix and back again. But while I’ve grown comfortable with using all different looks to create my personal style, there are still some taboos that I’ve been afraid to break. I sometimes find myself thinking things like “I can’t buy that skirt, it’s long and I’m short,” and limiting myself based on age old rules that don’t always hold true. As a person who is always encouraging others to break the so-called fashion “rules,” it’s time I let go of them too. This year I’d like to have a more open mind about trends that I don’t think I can pull off.

3) Full Steam Ahead
Trends and Tolstoy has expanded in just a year from a casual hobby to my salary paying, part-time job. Our readership has grown from twenty or so people to over 16,000 and we’ve moved from the US to countries all over the world. I am stunned by the incredible growth of the blog, and so proud of the level of quality it has reached. In my style resolutions this year I would like to include this resolution for Trends and Tolstoy. In 2013 I want to continue to deliver fashion photos, tips, and conversation that our readers will enjoy. I want to bring in exciting new locations as Jamie and I travel through Europe this spring, and I want to showcase this year’s trends while staying true to my personal style.

2012 was an amazing year for fashion and for Trends and Tolstoy. I can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for us. Here’s hoping glam rock makes a comeback!

Dressed Up, New Year's, NH, Style Resolutions

What a year! It’s amazing how much faster time seems to go as you get older. Already it’s the end of 2011 and it has been a great year. I’m not one to go out and party so I rang in the New Year at a small dinner with my close friends. We got all dolled up, made spinach and feta twice-baked potatoes, and watched the ball drop. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to one year and hello to another.

I have several style resolutions for the coming year, and this blog is a great way to see if I keep them. I’m sure this time next year I’ll be looking back through my posts wondering what happened!

1. Having Faith in My Own Style
It’s inevitable that I’ll pick out an outfit and be really excited about it but when I go around asking for opinions from friends and family, someone won’t like it. That’s just the way it is, my personal style won’t work for everyone. In the past I’ve dwelt on these negative reactions. All day I’ll worry that my outfit really doesn’t look quite right. Even if I received 9 out of 10 good reactions, that one negative response would make me lose faith in the ensemble. Upon reflection this is really sort of silly. The whole point of having a personal style is wearing clothes that are unique to my own tastes. If I start basing my outfits off other people’s preferences then it’s not my own. This year I’d like to work more on owning my own style and taking all criticism with a grain of salt.

2. Don’t Forget the Details
Especially with my busy schedule in college, it’s hard to find time to plan out the perfect outfit. And while I do pretty well picking out my clothes, I often forget the details. It’s little things like adding jewelry and doing something a little different with my hair that will make all the difference in my outfits. Sometimes it just takes that one little thing to pull a look together. I’d like to look beyond just the clothes this year and remember to add accessories and finishing touches that will bring my looks to the next level.

3. Experimenting with Different Looks
My personal style has evolved immensely in the past few years, even more rapidly since I started this blog. I love watching the evolution and seeing my style change and mature as I’m influenced by different things. But what I don’t do a lot is experiment with types of style that are out of my comfort zone. I think I’ve sort of boxed myself into a a frame of ladylike skirts and classic pumps. And while classic femininity is at the core of my style, I’d like to experiment with trends that might not always fit that mold. This year I will try to keep in mind that not everything I wear has to “look like something I’d wear,” it just has to make me feel good in it.

Here’s to another wonderful, fashion-filled year!
