Blogger Collaboration, Edgy, H&M, New England, Pink Blazer, So Anthro, Sweet

From the very beginning I knew that Emily Geaman of So Anthro and I were kindred spirits. Aside from sharing a love of fashion, we also have Emerson College in common (she graduated in 2010), but most importantly we both understand the value of Nutella lattes, polka dots, and all things pink.

Emily and I had been talking about collaborating on a post for quite some time and over the summer we found that we had another thing in common, a bright pink blazer from H&M. This became the starting point of our collaboration and we decided to style the blazers separately to express our own personal tastes and then shoot them together. I adore Emily’s sweet, sassy, New England style and I love the way her outfit works with my edgier version. I couldn’t help but feel a little bit like the evil twin in the pairing!

Emily styled her blazer in a classic, preppy, and adorable ensemble with cuffed jeans, and a simple black tee. She accessorized with strappy metallic sandals, pearls, and a gorgeous Kate Spade bag. The look was totally representative of her style which is all at once girly, trendy, and pulled together.

I took the blazer down a different path, pairing it with a screen print tank, and my beloved leather pants. I accessorized with my favorite cage heels, and some spiked arm candy. I love the way Emily and I were able to take two very similar blazers and turn them into totally different looks.

As fashion bloggers we know that the details matter. Every little bit of the outfit can express your personal style from nail color to accessories.

How perfect is this girl? I love this photo, it’s so magazine ready.

Don’t try this at home. Swinging in heels is a lot more dangerous than you think!

I love the good girl/bad girl dynamic we have going on in these photos!

A big thank you to Emily Geaman for this fantastic day! I had so much fun and I’m so happy we were able to do this shoot together. Be sure to check out So Anthro for more of Emily’s style.

Atlas Magazine, Donate, Fundraiser, Indiegogo, Perks, Styling

I have mentioned my position as the style editor for Atlas Magazine several times before, and now Trends and Tolstoy is partnering with the magazine. Atlas is currently raising money to print our Winter 2012 issue. After all of the hard work that has gone into creating this magazine it’s very important to me that we are able to go to print and are able to show off what we have created. Trends and Tolstoy is working with Atlas on several exciting fundraisers. Here are the ways you can help:

1. Donate: This is the most straightforward option. You can donate to Atlas Magazine through our Indiegogo, here. There are a variety of perks available for those who donate through our Indiegogo. For $75 you receive a personal shopping consulting and styling experience with me, and for $100 you receive the shopping consultation as well as a photo shoot which will be featured here on Trends and Tolstoy. For $150 you can receive a professional shoot with photographer Rheanna O’Neil Bellomo who shot my fairytale post.

2. Vote: If you can’t support Atlas through financial means, there is another great way to help the magazine. Indiegogo is running a competition on Facebook where friends and family can vote for the best “perk.” The perk that gets the most votes wins $500 for their campaign. Atlas has submitted the Trends and Tolstoy styling perk into the competition. To vote click here. Keep in mind that you can vote every hour from now until Monday so keep coming back!

3. Spread the Word: Even if you are unable to support Atlas Magazine at this time, we would greatly appreciate it if you spread the word about our cause. The staff has worked so hard this year to produce a professional magazine that is our best issue yet. Every little bit counts, even telling your friends.

We appreciate your support so much, together we can make sure Atlas Magazine goes to print!

Cinderella, Fairy Godmother, Fairytale, Modern Cinderella, Prince Charming, Tutu

A few weeks ago, while shopping for Halloween costumes, I came across the most gorgeous green tutu. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it. The sheer layers, overwhelming volume, and knee length instantly brought images of a fairytale to my mind. I started forming a vision for a photo shoot, a modern Prince Charming and Cinderella in Boston. I was immensely fortunate to be able to partner with Rheanna O’Neil Photography to help this vision come to life. This is the Trends and Tolstoy fairytale.

Once Upon a Time…
There was a bouncing bibliophile with an affinity for tutus and high heeled shoes. She found herself wandering through Boston all dressed up but with nowhere to go.

Fortunately, she ran into a handily located Fairy Godmother who was more than happy to help with a little sprinkle of fairy dust. Here, cleverly disguised as leaves.

Just a few minutes later there appeared a dashing set of young men, conveniently just as overdressed as the girls. I mean, just look at those bow ties. To die for.

It seemed only appropriate at this point that there be dancing, and so they paired off for a not at all awkward waltz without music.

Cinderella may have gotten the tutu but the Fairy Godmother was experiencing a love affair of her own. You get it, girl!

Despite some struggles with correct form (who knew dancing could be so hard?) Cinderella and Prince Charming mastered the steps.

But alas, as charming as the Prince was, Cinderella had to leave the ball in a hurry to get to the Kate Spade sample sale. In her rush to get to those signature polka dot purses, Cinderella left her favorite spiked pumps behind. Cute boys are great but a girl has just got to have her priorities.

Prince Charming was having none of that, he refused to be beaten out by a sample sale that wouldn’t even include Louboutins. He rushed after Cinderella and returned her shoe.

And, hey, a guy who’s willing to respect the power of a fierce shoe has got to be a keeper.

But what really sealed the deal for Cinderella was Prince Charming reading aloud to her from War and Peace. Because that’s a totally normal thing that couples do, right? I mean, this is Trends and Tolstoy after all.

Russian literature aside, I guess he was a pretty decent guy too.

And they all lived happily ever after. At least until the park rangers kicked them off the property.

The End.

A big thank you to Rheanna O’Neil Photography for taking these absolutely stunning photographs! Also, a huge thank you to Charlie Fay for playing my Prince Charming, and Sarah Porter and Blaise Fritsche for being my Fairy Godmother and her handsome date!

Alyssa Davis, Body Chain, Harness, Jewelry, Skiler Love, Statement Necklace, Tribal

When most people think of designers they thinks of runway shows, big crowds, exclusivity, and, naturally, clothes. But today I’d like to talk about an incredible jewelry designer I had the pleasure of working with recently. Her name is Alyssa Davis and her brand is called “Skiler Love,” pronounced sky-ler.

Her jewelry is all handmade and each piece shows off an exquisite kind of individuality and craftsmanship that is hard to find in this mass-market world. The pieces I’ve styled are from her newest collection “Bohemian Luxe.” She describes it as a little vintage charm, with a modern simplicity and a whole lot of individuality.   This body chain was one of my favorite pieces in the collection. I love the idea of jewelry worn in new ways and this harness-like chain is both on trend and simple enough to wear easily.   The Calypso body chain is $65, come in three sizes, and will be available for online purchase on October 1.

This next piece I’m wearing is the Tribal Collar, one of the more colorful pieces in the collection. I love statement necklaces and this one is such a unique mix of tribal and edgy. It’s also incredibly easy to wear with just about anything.

The Tribal Collar necklace is $75 and will be available for online purchase October 1st. To see more of Skiler Love and learn about Alyssa’s jewelry, check out her website. Those who are local to the Boston area can also come to her launch party on September 30th at The Greatest Bar from 7-9pm. It’s going to be a great show!

Earrings, OASAP, Red Lip

The red lip has been a classic in fashion for ages, but this time I’m taking it beyond a swipe of lipstick. I generally don’t wear makeup and often wearing lipstick is a lot of work. With these red lip earrings, courtesy of OASAP, I get all the sass of a red lip without trouble!

The red lip earrings can be found here for purchase!

Consignment, Esta, fashion, High-end Consignment, Portsmouth, Resale, Shopping

There are many posh boutiques and style stops in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire. But nestled among restaurants on Bow street is a stop you just can’t miss. Esta is a high-end consignment store with amazing styles at up to 40% off their original price.

I fell completely in love with these blue heels below, originally from Barney’s.

A lot of the consignment stores in Portsmouth are geared towards an older market but Esta has beautiful pieces for many ages and sizes. I was amazed to find so many shoes in a size 5!

But Esta’s real gem isn’t hidden behind the Isaac Mizrahi shoes or under the Lily Pulitzer purse. Esta’s real gem is sitting behind the desk in the back of the store, and her name is Ann. Ann is the founder of Esta and has run the business right through to it’s two year anniversary, last week.

In a self-serve world it is so refreshing to meet a store owner who cares about more than the bottom line. Ann was more than happy to simply show me around the store and ogle the gorgeous designer labels with me. With Esta’s incredible selection of merchandise, great prices, and Ann’s kindness, it is an absolute must when in Portsmouth.

For more information about Esta you can check out their website here, and be sure to check it out next time you’re in Portsmouth, you won’t be disappointed.
