Last week Anne Sasser hosted a 16th birthday party at Stonybrook Fine Arts in Jamaica Plain. After the party each girl left with a cute little critter to remember the evening by. The twist? They welded those critters themselves.
Stonybrook Fine Arts is a school that offers instruction and resources in jewelry making, welding, metal casting, stone carving, mold making, and live figure modeling. Their most popular program is welding, where craftsmen of all levels (including beginners!) are welcome to take workshops or use the space for their personal projects.
Another cool program the school offers is jewelry making. You can make your own rings in a comprehensive class taught on site. Then you get to take two rings with you when you leave. “When you take a workshop to learn something, it’s nice to leave with something,” says Anne.
Stonybrook also has general studio space upstairs for other artists and during open studio days they display artwork as well as host live demonstrations of their classes. They offer custom workshops, team building exercises, birthday parties, and a make-your-own wedding ring class (how cute is that?).
As an artist in her own right and a graduate from the SMFA, Anne is happy to make resources available to a larger audience. “I love doing this, I can create an environment where people can make new art and learn new skills,” she says, “My favorite part is watching people make something they’re really excited about and proud of.”
Stonybrook will be hosting jewelry making and aluminum sand casting classes for ArtWeek on October 4th. Their fall classes began September 23 and are open for registration on their website. For you students in the area, they’re also looking for studio and office interns.
It’s one thing to wear cool fashion but it’s another to make it yourself. Stonybrook allows you to merge art and fashion with their jewelry making workshops, and to express your artistic self with their other welding and casting options.
