A few weekends ago I was lucky enough to be able to attend the 2014 Alternative Fashion Show, focusing on eco fashion products and designers. The event was hosted by eco designer Alyssa Couture, she did an incredible job pulling everything together.
The night was more than just a runway show. There were several empowering speakers who discussed the importance of sustainable goods in contemporary fashion. Above is Martha Jackson, a restoring and repurposing designer.
The models were accompanied by an incredible live violinist. It was such a step up from the usual mindless music the runway is used to.
Local vendors of eco friendly goods were able to showcase their products before and after the show. There were some incredible pieces made from recycled or alternative materials. I saw some cool leather-look pieces that were actually made from recycled tires.
I didn’t realize how much charity and eco fashion went hand-in-hand. Almost everyone I talked to seemed to have a charitable aspect to their organization. Priya Samant of Earth Frendz employs young Indian women as part of her business model. This empowers them to be self-sufficient and break down some of the cultural gender biases.
Thanks so much to Alyssa and everyone who participated in the show! I had an incredible time and learned so much about the eco fashion world.
