Our next step in the Artist Series is the photographer Yasuhiro Wakabayashi, professionally known as Hiro. Hiro is a fashion photographer with a bold aesthetic that’s still widely influential. He began work in the mid ’50s and is still active today. Much of his work has an edgy, modern feel to it, perhaps because he worked with Richard Avedon in his early days. The Museum of Fine Arts has an exceptional Hiro exhibit up through August, which is where we shot this look.
Hiro’s work is very chic, so I channeled my inner fashionista with a classic black dress and a dramatic wide-brim hat. A lot of Hiro’s photographs have a very editorial, and in some cases minimal, vibe that I think this outfit represents well. Here I tried to emulate the smooth lines and dramatic posture that’s characteristic of Hiro’s work.
