Mother’s Day is fast approaching and I’ve been brainstorming more inventive gift ideas than the traditional flowers and dinner out. I found the perfect gift at Alternative Art Space in the South End. Fernando DeOliveira, owner of the gallery and a talented abstract artist, has created a line of stunning silk scarves with his artworks printed on them. My mom is an artist and a fashionista, with the DeOliveira scarves she gets the best of the both worlds. The scarf I’m featuring here is the “Koi Pond” iteration, a rich gold and brown piece that pairs well with neutrals and colors. All the scarves are made from 100% silk and the construction is impeccable. They come in two sizes, handkerchief, which works well for tying on bags or as a hair piece, and scarf, the size I’m wearing above. The scarf size sells for a reasonable $175 and the handkerchief for $45. A small price to pay to give mom a one-of-a-kind piece of art that she can pair with her favorite outfits.
Each scarf comes beautifully wrapped in an elegant box with gold tissue paper and a matching bag. Seriously, it’s Tiffany-level presentation. There are several colors available. For more information or to order one for your mom, e-mail thealternativeartspace@gmail.com.
