I’m usually not much for Halloween, but when Goodwill challenged me to make a costume from finds at their store, I couldn’t resist. I put together three different Halloween looks inspired by powerful women. The first is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Supreme Court Justice who has reached internet fame over the last few years.
Politics aside, RBG is an amazing woman. She broke glass ceilings left and right growing up and fought her way to the Supreme Court when women really weren’t wanted there. She battled cancer and continued serving, working crazy hours to make things work. Now she’s 85 years old and still fighting for the rights of women.
I put the costume together by layering a black cape dress (similar to a Justice robe) over a lacey white button down. RBG is known for her elaborate collars where she brings style to the Supreme Court uniform. I pulled my hair back to imitate her no-nonsense bun and accessorized with one of her biographies.
But why stop at just one costume? I also had to go with the classic Frida Kahlo look. I mean who would turn down an excuse to wear sleeves like this? To channel the Latina look I went with bright colors and volume and accessorized with the fan and a flower crown, an homage to Frida’s use of flowers in her paintings.
Still not sold? My last look is Nancy Drew. I loved the Nancy Drew mysteries growing up and this matching plaid skirt suit seemed just up her alley. She might not come up on your typical list of powerful women but Nancy was never afraid to head into a sticky situation to find the truth. As a journalist, I can really respect that.
Because I was shopping at Goodwill these costumes cost me next to nothing and I love knowing that money goes back into my community.
What are you going as for Halloween?
