Inside My Art Collection: Sculpture

March 8, 2019,
by Celina[zilla_likes]

I’m always fascinated by the art that people in the art world collect. Typically each piece tells a story and it becomes a very intimate way to learn about someone. I thought I would dip my toe in the water of an art collection series with my small but powerful sculpture collection. If you like it I’ll continue with the works I have in other media.

This is a Chichi doll that I purchased in Curacao. You may remember it from my trip there last year. The Chichi represents strong women everywhere. I loved this one in particular because her hands are spread wide in a joyful embrace. She’s strong and powerful but she’s not afraid to let life in. That’s a lesson I can really learn from. Each Chichi is hand painted by a female artist on the island.

This piece was given to me by a dear friend and talented artist, Dinah Ribarsky. These miniature, otherworldly landscapes are one of her signature pieces. This is especially precious to me, not just for its aesthetic merits, but because it was a gift from her. An artist giving you an artwork is an artist giving you a piece of themselves. Every day when I see it it reminds me how lucky I am to have such wonderful people (and wonderful art) in my life.

When I went to Russia I already knew I wanted a Matryoshka (a nesting doll). Though historically relatively new, it’s a quintessential Russian item. But I didn’t want one of the cheap touristy ones that’s painted and lacquered by machine in China. A true Matryoshka is hand painted and usually tells the story from a Russian fairytale. I found this one at a tiny interior design shop in Saint Petersburg. It’s a matte style which is more traditional and it was hand painted by a local artist.

Are you interested in seeing the rest of my collection? Let me know in the comments!
