Shopping Small (Again)

May 23, 2020,
by Celina[zilla_likes]

Yes I’m still using shopping as a coping mechanism for the emotional void caused by this pandemic. But on the bright side I’m still supporting the local economy! Here are some of the local businesses I’ve been buying from lately.

Hilliards Chocolates

Though based outside of Boston, Hilliards Chocolates has been producing high quality chocolate delights for decades as a family run company. I ordered a spring special, lemon lavender truffles, and they were to die for! Shipping was really prompt and the truffles arrived perfectly in tact. I may have to spring for the rosé flavor next.

Curds & Co

This woman owned cheese shop in Brookline Village is a cheese lovers paradise. For Mother’s Day I worked with a cheesemonger there to put together an elaborate charcuterie board inspired by Argentina where my mom is from. Using a Malbec rosé as a flavor base we put together cheeses, meats, honeys, jams, crackers, the whole nine yards. It was an amazing experience and lasted us for several days of celebrating.

Brookline Booksmith

This is one of my favorite bookshops in the area. I can’t even walk within three blocks of it without popping in to browse their plethora of discounted remnant titles. They’re also known for staging author talks and readings which they’ve continued to do virtually. I saw a talk with Julia Alvarez one of my favorites and bought her new book Afterlife afterwards.

Island Creek Oysters

Dining out is one of the things I’ve missed most during this pandemic. Especially in nice weather there’s nothing like sitting on a patio with a glass of wine and a dozen oysters. My dad is also a big oyster fan so for his birthday I ordered oysters and caviar delivered to his house. Island Creek (where I went oyster farming for that article!) ships overnight for free and they have some of my all time favorite oyster types.

Sewfisticated

This discount sewing shop, which has several locations in Boston and beyond, has somehow stayed open during the pandemic. I went in person to pick up mask making fabrics and other supplies and it was a wild ride. But pandemic chaos aside, this shop has SPECTACULAR prices, a great fabric selection, and a knowledgable if no-nonsense owner. It has absolutely become my go-to fabric store.

Those chocolates look delicious. I didn’t know your mother was Argentina. From which part? I live in Cordoba. Do you speak Spanish?
