My mom has been raving about Zimman’s in Lynn for years and ever since I’ve started sewing it’s officially become the Mecca of our creative household. Zimman’s is a fabric store that’s been operating out of Central Square in Lynn since 1909. It’s still family run by a fourth generation descendant which is very cool.
Inside is a wonderland for sewers. It’s basically a four floor warehouse full of fabric. The main floor has all the market price new fabrics and the basement has the bargains. It requires some digging but you can score some great deals. The top two floors are furniture showrooms for interior designers. You can pick a piece of furniture upstairs and then a fabric to upholster it in downstairs.
Something to note: most of the fabric is geared towards interiors other than a small section of apparel fabrics in the basement. But if you get creative and look at everything for its potential rather than what it says on the tag there’s a lot to work with. I picked up a few faux leathers and a beautiful heavy blue fabric to use as a coat. The crowning glory was an artsy light cotton (pictured above, third photo) that easily translates for apparel.
What’s your favorite fabric store?
