Some of you may know that I’ve been volunteering at a nursing home every week for five years. I also visit some friends at Brookline Center Communities, a housing facility for seniors and differently abled people, a few times a month. Since COVID-19 I haven’t been able to do either and it’s been torturous to be away from my senior friends. To keep the positivity up, for them and for myself, I’ve been mailing letters to them every week.
I pretty much live at the post office now. And since the USPS is in so much trouble, I feel extra motivated to utilize the system. I’ve been sending packages to friends, writing my weekly letters to the nursing home, and buying fancy stamps like a madwoman.
There’s something cathartic in the routine of it and something refreshingly creative about picking out stationary, positioning a well placed sticker, and occasionally sealing an envelope with a wax seal. I know I love receiving any mail that isn’t a bill, so I hope that by sending these small tokens I can bring a smile to someone else’s face.
Have you been sending more mail than usual?
