I joined a gym for the first time last fall and, aside from the COVID-19 closures, have been going ever since. It’s a process, a year later I still feel like I’m getting the hang of things, but I’m absolutely getting the hang of workout clothes. It’s become a really interesting sartorial study for me because the rules are completely different. I would never wear leggings with a cropped top in normal life, but for a workout it’s completely permissible.
My general workout outfit philosophy is that I should be able to go directly from the gym to the bar. Generally, pre-COVID-19, that’s how my lifestyle would work. I’d fit in a gym class and then meet up with friends or swing by an event. I’ll be incorporating some of these workout outfits into a regular series on the blog.
In case anyone in the Boston area is looking for a gym: I go to Benefitness. One of the reasons I chose it is because it’s women only. Let’s be honest, I deal with enough creepy/gross men in normal life and on the internet, I don’t need that hurdle while I’m working out. The gym also has a robust class schedule which is better for me (I can’t self motivate) and the staff and other members are very supportive. It’s an older crowd, mostly 50+ women which I really like. Everyone is friendly and we have a great time together, there’s none of that self consciousness or social weirdness.
The base of this look is leggings, sneakers, and a pullover. I would wear this with a t-shirt underneath for a weight training class or even cardio. By adding the leather jacket and the sweatshirt I stay warm during my commute and can easily meet friends after a class.
