March Reading List

March 31, 2021,
by Celina[zilla_likes]

I had a very fun reading list this month! Nicer weather also means more lazy afternoons reading in the sun, one of my favorite activities. Thank you Random House for gifting me these books, noted with a star!

Sisters
Daisy Johnson

This is an eerie piece blending the real and the mystical. Two sisters and their mother move into a new house to escape a haunting, unspecified past. As the book goes on the borders of reality crumble and you begin to question what really happened that made them flee town.

The Barbizon
Paulina Bren

I loved this book! It’s a history of the Barbizon Hotel for Women in New York City. This was one of the first residential hotels for women and it provided a safe space for working women who came to the city alone. Even more interesting, the hotel was open for almost a hundred years and managed to change with the times because of this ongoing need.

The Soul of a Woman*
Isabel Allende

The latest memoir by Isabel Allende and of course it’s killer. I’ve always loved Allende’s writing and here she merges memoir and feminist manifesto. It’s wonderful to get some insight into how she became the spectacular author and champion of women that she is today.

My Sister, The Serial Killer
Oyinkan Braithwaite

This is well written, engaging, and an absolute page turner. I finished it in two days just because I couldn’t put it down. It’s about a woman whose sister’s boyfriends often mysteriously end up dead. Her sister has always claimed self defense but when she becomes interested in the protagonist’s crush things get more complicated.

The Art of the Heist
Myles J. Connor

I’ve read a few books about art heists/crime and they’re not always very well done. Believe it or not, it is possible to make an art heist sound boring. BUT, this is a very well written and engaging book. It’s written by one of the most notorious art thieves in Boston. He co-write it with a journalist so although it’s in his voice everything has been fact checked. It’s interesting to see things from his perspective and understand his motivation. I highly recommend.
