Of the many wonderful trips I’ve been on this year, a quick visit to The Coach House in Salem is the most recent. Salem is known for its witchy history, and while I love how that history has been appropriated in a more empowering way, the town has a lot more to offer than just broomsticks. You can find a host of things to do in my piece about Salem for TravelGirl Magazine.
The Coach House is a stunning boutique inn built in the historic mansion of a former ship captain. Dating back to 1879, the building maintains a lot of its original charm, with significant comfort upgrades. The property is located about a mile from downtown Salem and the commuter rail train. It’s not an insurmountable distance for those without a car but it’s something to consider in terms of walking in and out of town for dinner and other activities.
Aesthetics are paramount at The Coach House and everything is designed to visual perfection. The rooms are spacious, most offering seating areas and full closets as well as roomy bathrooms in addition to the bedroom area. They use Frette linens and robes so you pretty much never want to leave the bed. Black out curtains are very helpful for sleeping in as well.
I was impressed with the attention to detail at this property. The have a custom North Shore scent that’s used in diffusers throughout the property, and very thoughtful elements like cordless phone chargers by the beds instead of clocks and elegant champagne glasses. When the rooms are the primary reason for booking a hotel, they have to be perfect, and The Coach House has achieved that.
The Coach House uses a contactless check in and check out process and there are no staff on the premises. This can be nice in that you don’t have to deal with unnecessary logistics when you’re trying to enjoy your trip and a concierge is available by text at all times. There’s no food served on site at this property, although they do have coffee machines in the rooms.
There are a few things within closer walking distance of the hotel, including a Jaho Coffee, a chic Salem staple cafe, but the area is overall more of a suburban vibe.
I think The Coach House would be ideal for a romantic getaway, especially if you have a car. The distance from downtown means it’s quiet and the rooms are romance ready with candlelit fireplaces and luxe showers. It’s a perfect beautiful, luxury landing spot while you’re exploring Salem and the North Shore.
