DIY: Thrifted Skirt Revamp

June 14, 2013,

As I’m sure the dedicated followers of this blog have noticed – I love tutus. I can’t get enough of them. So when I saw this gorgeous black and gold tutu at a thrift store in Cambridge, I knew I had to have it. With some minor alterations and a little accessorizing, I made this skirt my own.

DIYthriftedskirtrevamp11I sectioned off what I needed to take in and pinned it in place. In this case it was about four inches, but I usually eyeball these measurements. I like skirts to sit on my natural waist, at the smallest part of me.

DIYthriftedskirtrevamp7Then I double stitched down both sides of the pinned in piece. Because I doubled up the layers of fabric, I stitched by hand to avoid a machine problem.

DIYthriftedskirtrevamp8Here’s the finished tacking in the back of the skirt, because the tutu is so full the change is unnoticeable.

DIYthriftedskirtrevamp5Next I took these self-studs and poked them through the fabric at the waistband of the skirt. These were very easy to use, I just poked them through and bend the arms down with my nails.

DIYthriftedskirtrevamp4I eyeballed this measurement as well, placing the studs about an inch, an inch and a half apart.

DIYthriftedskirtrevamp2And as a finished result I have a gorgeous studded tutu that fits to my exact measurements. This was an easy way to take a thrifted piece and make it my own.

Photos are mine.
