Fenway fans have a new haven in Waxy’s Modern Irish Bar and Kitchen, nestled on Beacon Street in Brookline. The spot brings some much-needed night life to an otherwise sleepy stretch of brownstones and coffee shops. Though heralded as an Irish spot, the space exudes a sports bar vibe with a shiny wood paneled bar and hi-def screens for play-by-play Pedroia.
The signature cocktail list is a comfortable compromise between classic flavors and new mixes. The Snake Rattle and Rum poses a delightful blend of bite and savor with Three Olives Elvis vodka, pineapple, ginger, and angostura bitters. On the sweet side, the Fruitations Cranberry is a fizzy answer to a Cosmopolitan starring Absolut Elyx, cranberry, lime, and soda. The result is a light, colorful concoction that pairs well with prosecco.
The kitchen puts a foodie spin on traditional bar fare with pulled pork sliders and jalapeño clam chowder. The sweet battered chicken wings are a refreshing change from the expected barbecue flavors. In the full menu, the Irish roots of the restaurant shine with dishes like Guinness beef stew, and bangers and mash. But don’t be fooled by these classic pub-style dishes. Waxy’s has an unexpected sophisticated side, simultaneously serving a chicken and brie dish and a butternut squash risotto. Attentive staff brings an upgraded level of service to the laid back spot. In the food and the décor, Waxy’s perfectly walks the line between edgy and comfortable; a savvy business move that will entice sports goers and food lovers alike.
Ample seating and a private room primed for events accommodates not only the Red Sox group, but dinner and lunch goers as well. The central bar has the capacity for a large group both sitting and standing and partitioned off eating areas promise you’ll be able to hear your Tinder date list their favorite movies. The artwork, though somewhat generic, makes the large space more intimate and thoughtful. As the weather begins to warm up, Waxy’s boasts patio seating overlooking the scenic avenue of traditionally Boston brownstones and cherry blossoms. For those willing to walk as far for beer as they are for parking, Waxy’s is a can’t-miss hub for game day fun and sophisticated fare.
