All my jobs are very social. I go to a lot of events, do a lot of networking, and am endlessly interviewing people for my articles. Sometimes after a busy week I just want to be alone. But sitting in my apartment for hours on end isn’t really my style. I like to be alone in a crowd. So lately I’ve been taking myself on solo date nights around the city and it has been a BLAST. I failed to document my first outing but it involved a four hour Russian film and champagne at the Coolidge Corner Theater and it was blissful.
This time around I thought I’d share my adventure. I recently went to the symphony for a special Handel and Haydn concert celebrating Mozart’s birthday. It was a stunning performance and a nice opportunity to experience the group before their artistic director Harry Christophers steps down. This also checked off the orchestral concert box on my winter bucket list!
After the show I walked over the newly opened Westland restaurant to check the place out. I’ve been waiting in eager anticipation for them to open because the food options around the symphony are so limited. And my wait has been rewarded! It’s both a female chef and a female bar manager which is awesome to see. So rarely are both creative leads women in the restaurant industry.
You know I’m a sucker for a craft cocktail, and these are all inspired by the statues in Symphony Hall. On the left is “The Huntress” with vodka, elderflower liqeuer, house-made blackberry cordial, pressed lemon, and prosecco. I’m normally not one for vodka but that was delicious. On the right is “Afternoon, Sir” with bourbon, espresso liqueur, house-made chocolate-coconut milk, and orange and angostura bitters. It’s dessert in a glass. I also love that it’s made with coconut milk to make it accessible to people who don’t do dairy.
In addition to the drinks I had the scallops, wonderfully light and fresh, and the pork belly fries, I died of happiness. I topped off the night with the bananas foster bread pudding, because one dessert just wasn’t enough. All in all it was divine evening, best of all because I could talk, or not, to my heart’s content.
